Homelessness looks different on everyone. Old quote: “You may be one check away from being homeless”. I have been giving to the homeless and needy for over 30 years. It has always been my passion to care for anyone in need. My mother was always a giver. I never thought twice about giving to others because that’s what my mother instilled in all of her ten children. I never thought about why I give or help others until I was asked to write my story on why I give to others in need.
I was 17 year old when I discovered we were once or twice homeless; due to evictions. I remember walking home from school as I approach our building 1340 N. Larrabee #1503, I observed what looks like our furniture, clothes, the laugher of adults and kids. We had to move in with relatives and friends; who also had families. My siblings and I were separated due to our large family. Some of my siblings moved in with friends. As I look back at my childhood. I understand now why my mother would always say, “Pay your rent first before you pay anything else.” My mother would drill this in our heads before passing away from Ovarian Cancer.
After my mother passing it was about survival. Thankful for the lesson from my mother, I learned how to survive.
Our door was always open. My mother would always say if someone needs a warm place or something to eat may sure you help them because you never know where you will be tomorrow. As soon as I landed my first job, I started collecting item to give away to whom every needed it. Once a month, I will go out into the homeless community (sometimes it was in my own neighbor) and give out essential items. I always keep items in my vehicle just in case I come in contact with someone in need.
Now that I look back it was inspired by my late mother to help other and not be selfish. I have been self-funding my mission for years. It wasn’t until I was helping the homeless and a women asked me what organization was I with because she sees me so often, I’m like none. I purchase items myself or from friends. She said you should apply for a Tax Exempt. That was over two years ago because I had no clue on how to obtain my Tax exempt, nor what it was. Here I am today with my Tax Exempt for Karing In Motion. I received my Tax Exempt December 2021
